For sale is Chess Life, July 20, 1957: Bobby Fischer, 14, on the front page twiceFischer hadn't won anything yet when this issue went to press. The U.S. Junior was still being played in San Francisco, and the U.S. Open in Cleveland was about two weeks off. The front page has him in seventh place at the New Western Open in Milwaukee ("14-year-old Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn," 6-2, among a field of USCF masters) and again as the name at the head of 33 juniors heading for the national title.Chess Life's next two issues told the rest of it. He took the Junior with 8½-½, then won the U.S. Open with 10-2, tied with U.S. Champion Arthur Bisguier. This is the paper from just before that. The rest of the issue is worth a read too. There's a feature on 21-year-old Bent Larsen, who scored 14/18 on first board at Moscow 1956 and was awarded the grandmaster title, with his Réti win over Muffang annotated. The U.S. Student Team (Lombardy, Mednis, Saidy, Feuerstein, Sobel) is on its way to Iceland, with a profile of Lombardy, including his 91-move draw with Reshevsky. The Reshevsky–Bisguier ten-game match is underway at the Manhattan Chess Club. The front page also has Cleveland making its pitch to host the 58th U.S. Open, with a $1,000 first prize.Original newspaper format, 15 cents new.
