For sale is Chess Life, America's Chess Newspaper, Vol. XII No. 17, Monday, May 5, 1958. The lead story, "Botvinnik Within Reach of Title," follows the 1958 world championship match in Moscow. At press time Botvinnik led Smyslov 11½-8½ and needed only one win or two draws to regain his crown. The story covers the swings of the late games. Smyslov won the adjourned 15th after Botvinnik overstepped the time limit, then lost the 18th, which Soviet commentators called "a comedy of errors." He came back in the 19th to beat Botvinnik's fifth Caro-Kann of the match. Annotated games from the match are inside.Bobby Fischer shows up twice. "U.S. Junior Title Fight Wide Open" is about the Junior Championship at Homestead, Florida, with defending champion Fischer due to be in Russia. Paul Leith's "Portoroz Preview" covers the Interzonal, with Fischer and Reshevsky as the U.S. representatives and the Soviet field of Tal, Petrosian, Bronstein and Averbakh. Reshevsky annotates his game with Larsen from the Dallas International. Larry Evans writes on draw offers in tournament play. John W. Collins annotates games from the U.S. Women's Championship, and Edmund Nash's problem column and a Position No. 231 problem are included. Regional news covers Dr. Platz's win at Springfield, Mass., a "Backstage Story from St. Louis," and Aben Rudy's visit to the Central Park chess pavilion.Condition: Very Good for its age, with the normal toning of 1958 newsprint.
