Chess Life America's Chess Newspaper May 5, 1960
For sale is Chess Life, "America's Chess Newspaper," Vol. XIV, No. 17, dated Thursday, May 5, 1960.The banner headline is "FISCHER-SPASSKY CO-WINNERS AT MAR DEL PLATA," with the subhead "Bobby Wins 13, Draws 1 – (13½) – Boris Wins 12, Draws 3." Seventeen-year-old Bobby Fischer, the U.S. Champion, won his last round against Argentine champion Bernardo Wexler to catch Spassky after being behind for 13 rounds. His only dropped points in fifteen rounds were a loss to Spassky in round 2 and a draw with Bronstein. The paper closes the story by saluting "the kid from Brooklyn for such magnificent representation."The same front page reports the world championship match in Moscow. Tal still leads Botvinnik 6½-4½ after eleven games. Inside, Eliot Hearst's column "The Volcanic Tal" gathers what the grandmasters were saying about the new challenger. Szabo calls him "the eruption of a long-suppressed volcano." Ragosin says that "rather than moving the chess pieces with outstretched fingers, Tal seems to propel them with a magic wand." Bronstein offers a sharper comment on risk-taking. The column also includes what Tal and Fischer said about each other. Tal wrote that Fischer "in the near future will be a serious opponent," and Fischer calls Tal "the most 'booked-up' player in the world" but says he has much more respect for Botvinnik, Smyslov and Petrosian. There's more to read. William Lombardy writes on Spassky's comeback in "The Mighty Do Fall and Quite Often at That." Anthony Santasiere continues his essay on chess and love, Prof. Arpad Elo reports on the new rating formula and gives worked examples, and there's the story of Sultan Khan, the Indian chess player who vanished from the game and later turned up as a concert singer in Durban. Annotated games, problems, tournament results and letters from readers round out the issue.Condition is Very Good for its age, with the normal toning of 1960 newsprint.
