For sale is Chess Life, November 20, 1957: Fischer's "three straight," and the U.S. Championship roster that names himTwo weeks after Fischer took the U.S. Open, John Collins opens his games column by saying Bobby Fischer had now won the junior, the open and the New Jersey titles in one summer. The New Jersey finish is the game printed here, with Collins's notes: Fischer, 14, beating James Sherwin in a King's Indian Reversed, with a knight sacrifice on move 18 that Collins marks with two exclams. He finished at 6½-½, half a point clear of Anthony Santasiere, and Collins says players and spectators burst into applause. Then there's the detail a Fischer fan will want. In the previous issue (November 5), editor Montgomery Major wrote that Fischer faced a conflict between the Hastings Christmas tournament and the U.S. Championship, and that readers would miss him at the Championship that December. Two weeks later, this issue prints the official field of 14 for the Lessing J. Rosenwald Trophy tournament at the Manhattan Chess Club (December 17 to January 8), and Robert Fischer is on it, with Bisguier defending, Reshevsky, Evans, Denker, Lombardy, Robert Byrne, Berliner, Sherwin and the rest. Abe Rudy, in his New York column, calls it the strongest U.S. Championship in decades. By December 1958, Chess Life was listing Fischer as U.S. Champion.Around that:Hans Berliner annotates two of his own wins from the Champion of Champions tournament at Yankton.A. E. Santasiere proposes handing out prizes for the most beautiful games instead of the most points.A statistician's study asks whether White's first move really matters.Gresser leads the U.S. Women's Championship 7-1 after eight rounds in Los Angeles. The fund that sent the U.S. Student Team to Reykjavik closes at $1,327, with the donors listed.A furrier from Marion, Iowa, builds a chessboard out of fur to quiet banged pieces.Original newspaper format, 15 cents new.Very Good: normal age-toning, intact, kept in a clear sleeve.
