The same report sets March 4, 1958 as the date for the return match between Botvinnik and Smyslov, the new champion. That summer's two big names are on the inside pages too. John W. Collins annotates Fischer's win over A. Shoener in a King's Indian from the U.S. Junior Championship in San Francisco, under the title "Boy at Work." A second annotated Fischer game is a Sicilian win over Cardoso from their match in New York. The Collins pages also include the tenth game of the Byrne-Reshevsky match, an English Opening with Collins's notes, and games from the Marshall-Manhattan match.Larry Evans, newly a Grandmaster, takes on tie-breaks in his column "On Monterey and Breaking Ties." He argues that "cash, honors, and trophies should be divided equally," and he shows with figures how he lost a tie-break at the record 109-player California Open even though his record was better than the winner's. Montgomery Major's letter explains why he's cutting every tie with the USCF. A feature by Walter Korn looks at a Queen-versus-Rook-and-Pawn ending from Furman-Spassky, and the issue announces the "Cleveland Plan," the USCF's drive to recruit 2,000 volunteers. There's an ad for World Champion Vassily Smyslov and His One Hundred Best Games at $4.50.Condition is Very Good for its age, with the normal toning of 1950s newsprint.
