Chess Life America's Chess Newspaper September 5,, 1957
For sale is Chess Life, "America's Chess Newspaper," Vol. XII, No. 1, dated Thursday, September 5, 1957.This is the full story of Bobby Fischer's U.S. Open win. The Aug 20 issue had only a short box that said "details in next issue," and here are the details. At 14, the Erasmus High student from Brooklyn becomes the youngest player to win the U.S. Open, played that summer in Cleveland. He scored 10-2, tied with U.S. Champion Arthur Bisguier in games won, and took the title on tie-break points. Donald Byrne, who had just won the New Western Open, finished third at 9½-2½. The report goes round by round through the finish, with Fischer beating Donald Byrne, drawing with Shipman in the last round and holding off Bisguier by the narrowest margin.Next to it is a piece that asks the question every chess fan was asking: "Another Morphy? Only Time Can Tell Where Bobby Fischer Will Finally Rank." It traces his path from a tied-fifth finish at 12 through the U.S. Junior to Master rating that spring. It also notes his two-game match with former World Champion Max Euwe, and it concludes that "at the age of 14, young Robert Fischer of Brooklyn has a more distinguished chess career than Morphy had at the same age." Inside, Koltanowski announces that Fischer is invited to the next U.S. Championship in New York. There is more for a collector. Samuel Reshevsky annotates his own win over Bisguier from their 1957 match in a Nimzo-Indian, a feature traces William Lombardy's climb to the World Junior title with his perfect 11-0 in Toronto, and John W. Collins annotates Donald Byrne's win in a Dragon Sicilian from the Western Open. Montgomery Major's editorial, "Woman's Place in Chess," announces his coming retirement as editor, and the issue also carries the USCF business meeting report from Cleveland.Condition is Very Good for its age, with the normal toning of 1950s newsprint and a small nick along the bottom edge of the front page.
