For sale is the book The 20th Chess Olympiad, also known as the XX Olympiad, took place in Skopje, Yugoslavia (now part of present-day Macedonia) from September 18 to October 13, 1972. Organized by FIDE (the International Chess Federation), this prestigious event featured an open team tournament and several other chess-related activities. The Soviet team, led by Anatoly Karpov, featured three former world champions (Vasily Smyslov, Mikhail Tal, and Tigran Petrosian) and one future champion (Karpov himself). For the first time, the Soviet team did not include the current world champion (Bobby Fischer had defeated Boris Spassky earlier that year).Hungary and Yugoslavia were strong contenders, aiming for silver and bronze medals. In a match against Bulgaria, a sealed move controversy arose. Victor Korchnoi played against Georgi Tringov, and the game was adjourned.Tringov mistakenly placed his score sheet in his pocket instead of sealing it. The arbiter ruled the game a forfeit win for Korchnoi. After the Olympiad, it was discovered that Tringov had made an innocent mistake, but he was too ashamed to admit it during the event.Jens Enevoldsen represented Denmark in his 11th and final Olympiad, 39 years after his first appearance in 1933.The 5th Women’s Chess Olympiad also took place simultaneously, won by the Soviet Union team.Preliminaries and Finals:Sixty-three teams competed in preliminary groups, with the top two from each group advancing to Final A, and subsequent groups (Final B, Final C, etc.).Unlike previous tournaments, preliminary head-to-head results were not carried over to the finals. All groups played round-robin tournaments. The 20th Chess Olympiad celebrated the enduring spirit of chess and its global appeal.Skopje, despite its past devastation by an earthquake, hosted a memorable event that left a mark on chess history.
